Beginners Tai Chi Classes

Saturday, February 16, 2013 11:00am - 12:00am
Location: Admiral Building nw corner, Hurontario & 1st Street

Saturdays from 11-12 noon, or Sundays from 1-2 pm for 6 weeks, starting either February 16 or 17. Fee $60 for 6-hour course (advance payment), or $12 drop-in. The plan is for classes to continue beyond the initial 6 weeks. Progress in sports and activities as diverse as weight training, skiing, golf, running, climbing, kayaking, and equine arts demand centered movement, sensitive communications within the body, and open fearless relating to the environment.Tai Chi is uniquely suited to increase speed and power, heighten body awareness, sense of ease and patience, balance and coordination, intentional focus and alertness. From a health standpoint, Tai chi exercises increase bone density, joint flexibility, tissue elasticity and plasticity. Joints function better and are less likely to fail when falls do occur, or when the body is pushed to extremes. Tai Chi also relieves stress, boosts the immune, respiratory and cardiovascular systems, and increases the body’s innate healing capacities.

No big surprise; we will start this BEGINNERS TAI CHI CLASS with the basics. Fundamentals in Tai Chi are all-important: warm-up protocols, proper body postures and alignments, joint protection, sensing the body in space with growing awareness, balance and coordination, relaxation, and “the four energies”. Of course, participants will also learn a sequence of moves – “the form”. Learning a portion of the 24-move Wu-Style Short Form in this course will challenge the mind and body of every participant. “The form” ultimately becomes the main element of Tai Chi training and is infinitely perfectible. Grounding in the fundamentals helps de-construct the whys and wherefores of “the form'”, and makes it (and all Tai Chi forms) easier to learn. Even then, Tai Chi is not particularly easy, as with any rich discipline, but the payoffs are great and start coming right from the start for beginners.
